Guest Lecture from Prof. Pat Wheeler and Dr. Bagus Muljadi from The University of Nottingham, UK

On November 8, 2022, two professors from University of Nottingham, UK, Dr. Bagus Muljadi and Prof. Pat Wheeler, visited Sampoerna University to give lecture at Sampoerna University on the importance of multidisciplinary research and Power Electronics.

The opening remark was delivered by the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Surya Danusaputro Liman, PhD. In his talk, Liman highlighted the importance of international collaboration in education and research activities between the two universities.

Dr. Bagus Muljadi tells a moving story on how he was originally studying mechanical engineering major as his bachelor’s degree and ended up solving problems with multidisciplinary approach. His first job was to do a computational fluid dynamics analysis for a fluid flow problem in a semiconductor product. Using the similar skills of numerical simulation, in his post-doctoral job at Imperial College London, he took the chance to formulate a mathematical model to compute an oil-extraction process from highly porous rocks. These problems required not only mechanical engineering concept, but also mathematics, chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, and material science. Now he is an Assistant Professor in Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Nottingham.

“Nowadays, an engineer is demanded to not only have 1 specialty, but also having the understanding of other cross disciplinary fields so can deliver comprehensive engineering solution. So, willingness to learn and grow is the core value”, said Muljadi in his talks.

The second lecture was presented by Prof. Pat Wheeler, the Head of Power Electronics, Machines and Control Research Group and Professor of Power Electronic Systems, Faculty of Engineering in University of Nottingham. Wheeler explains his research projects in developing an electric passenger airplane. This technology requires not only a huge power of electric motor but also will require huge energy storage capacity. However, he mentioned that the current battery technology is not enough to accommodate storing the amount of energy required to fly an airplane. Fundamental research to create a new type of battery for airplane application is therefore urgently needed.

Head of Mechanical Engineering Department in Sampoerna University, Dr. Eng. Ir. Farid Triawan, emphasized in the closing remarks that students of Sampoerna University should consider of pursuing their higher degrees abroad. Sampoerna University is committed to give the full support for students pursuing Master’s and Doctorate’s degrees in reputable international universities such as University of Nottingham, such as by providing a consulting service in the Student Alumni Affair unit.

Study in the USA: Which Scholarships to Apply?

Looking to study abroad but worried about the cost? Good news! There are hundreds of college scholarships to study abroad. Some are offered by government agencies, some by individual universities, and others by external funding organizations and charitable enterprises.

While many scholarships ARE very competitive, it turns out there are plenty of others that may be easier to win than you think. Your odds of getting money to study, volunteer, or intern abroad might be far higher than you expect: you just have to identify the opportunities, tell a compelling story, and actually hit “apply!”

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in setting up a financial plan for going overseas is not even applying for study abroad scholarships.

7 Scholarships Indonesian Students Can Apply

Searching through all the international scholarships out there can be a pretty mammoth task. But we’ve tried to make this easier by creating lists of scholarships Indonesian students can apply to study abroad in the United States.

  1. Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program

The Humphrey Fellowship Program has received funding as a Fulbright exchange activity from the U.S. Congress since 1978 to honor the public service career of the late Senator and Vice President, Hubert H. Humphrey (1911-1978). A long-time advocate of international cooperation and understanding, Humphrey served as Vice President of the United States from 1965 to 1969 and for many years as a U.S. Senator from Minnesota.

President Jimmy Carter announced the establishment of the Humphrey Program on a state visit to Venezuela in March 1978. It would be a program, Carter said, embodying the values shared by the United States and Venezuela — democracy, social justice, and a desire to assist the developing nations of the world. A year after Carter’s declaration, the first Humphrey Fellows arrived in the U.S. They were 27 mid-career professionals from 24 countries who would study at 11 U.S. universities and institutions.

Since 1978, more than 6,000 Fellows from 157 countries have participated in the program. More than 40 universities have hosted the Fellows for their year of study.

Flexitech Evolusindo and supported by Asosiasi Printer Tridimensi Indonesia (Indonesia’s Tridimensional Printers Association) recently produced and donated face shield masks to several hospitals in Jakarta and Bekasi amid the current pandemic. This is meant to help the government curb the novel Coronavirus in Jakarta and its neighboring areas after the limited stock of protection tools put our medical workers at risk of contracting the contagious disease.

According to Farid Triawan (Head of Mechanical Engineering Study Program), Sampoerna University initiated the undertaking considering the fact that the university houses 3D printing technology in its lab.

“To produce face shield masks, our university as an international university in Jakarta, owns 3D printing technology in the lab of Faculty of Engineering and Technology that has a lot of most cutting-edge features, among other things producing prototypes instantly with design flexibility,” he stated. Further, he also explained that the 3D printing technology has enabled them to produce and design face shield masks fast.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” text_align=”center”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”5389,5390,5388″ layout=”3″ gallery_style=”1″ load_in_animation=”none”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]”Thanks to this technology, it’s possible to meet the high demand of protection masks as fast as possible,” Farid affirmed.

The lecturers of Design Communication Visual Study Program also joined the production team to help design a prototype that can be produced in a large amount.

As of April 17th, 2020 FET has distributed these masks to a number of hospitals in Jakarta and Bekasi. “We have sent 150 face shield masks to MMC Kuningan Hospital, 130 to Pondok Indah Hospital, and 82 to Awal Bros Hospital in East Bekasi,” he added.

“We thank Sampoerna University for donating these 150 face shield masks to our hospital to show its real support for medical workers here,” told dr. Sasha, one of the PR team members of MMC Kuningan Hospital.

This is in line with the mission of Sampoerna University to educate future leaders with moral characters, social responsibility, and skill mastery required to build a better Indonesia. The donation is also part of the realization of Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi, i.e. Dedication to Society. During the Pandemic, Sampoerna University Students Turn to Online Learning

In response to the recent COVID-19 outbreak and the government’s declaration to close all schools and campuses in Jakarta, Sampoerna University has taken several steps to ensure that its students and employees are protected and safe. One of these steps is by suspending face-to-face classes as of 16 March 2020 and switching to online, distant learning to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

Marshall Schott, Ph.D. (President of Sampoerna University) stated, “Our university has applied an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of its students and employees. Effective 18 March 2020, instruction will resume through distance learning.”

He further explained that all students are expected to continue learning using Canvas platform. In the meantime, access to remote services, including library resources, will not be impacted during this period.

To overcome challenges that may arise when shifting instructional modes during the middle of the academic term, Sampoerna University has also prepared the required guidance and resources. This is how our students can still learn during the closure of the campus.

For our students who are now taking Two-Degree Program, distant learning like this is familiar. They can still study with the U.S. Curriculum without leaving their family members and best friends in Jakarta. The best thing is they can still graduate with 2 degrees at the same time: a U.S. accredited bachelor’s degree from University of Arizona and a Strata 1 (Sarjana) degree from Sampoerna University, allowing them to grab both national and international career opportunities. Two-Degree Program is uniquely designed for students who want to save education expenses while getting the same international education in their homeland. It also enables them to avoid long-distance international trips that are very risky amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

But for those who still want to stick to their plans to study abroad, they can also earn internationally acknowledged college credits which are transferable to a U.S. university once the pandemic is over and they decide to finish their education overseas.

Make up your mind now to graduate safely on time. Don’t waste your precious years!

“It’s Okay to Feel Scared but Don’t Let It Hinder You!”

While studying at SMA Al Azhar BSD, Syifa Tsamara was interested in social studies, which include languages. “I decided to major in English Language Teaching at Sampoerna University due to my passion in both the English Language and in Education,” she said.

As she learned the news that she got accepted, she was anxious yet excited to experience a different university life from the rest of my graduating class. Most of them were going to big, public universities majoring in various fields. “While I was going to a relatively new, private university in the middle of Jakarta, majoring in something that people often question. But my English teachers encouraged me to enter Sampoerna University,” said the bright student who could have gone to Universitas Indonesia (French Literature major) but decided to go to Sampoerna University instead.

As she was studying at Sampoerna University, Syifa also had some professional experience up in her sleeves. She had been tutoring since her sophomore year and made use of her linguistic prowess to serve as an interpreter at numerous campus events. Aside from that, she was teaching as an intern at Sampoerna Academy Jakarta, Sampoerna Academy Boarding School, and Sekolah Kembang during four of her SEP periods respectively. Syifa’s best experience might be the fact that she served as President of BEM Faculty of Education from 2016 to 2018.

Previously working as an education intern at Titik Pintar, a startup company that focused on creating an educational app for elementary students, Syifa is currently working at Pusat Studi Pendidikan dan Kebijakan (PSPK) while working as an English tutor. “I’m working as a full-time junior researcher at PSPK, so I usually help with literature review for all projects. I also help with searching (and sometimes processing) the required data.”

Syifa is very fond of reading and writing, so in her free time she writes as much as she could. “I don’t read much these days just because I’m afraid to lose track of time,” confessed the bookworm. Therefore, when Syifa wants and needs to de-stress, she turns to games.

Syifa thinks that every experience she had at Sampoerna University is applicable to her life after graduation. “From communication and English classes, I had learned to be more confident in speaking up and speaking in front of many people, where all the attention is on me,” said the introverted youth. She also mentioned that Psychology and Social Emotional Learning are useful in the professional setting she is now living in.

Her extracurricular activities at Student Executive Organization of the Faculty of Education also taught her how to solve problems and interact with people with different personalities and characteristics. She is grateful for this because this had helped her a lot in adapting to new work environments.

Next, Syifa plans to pursue a master’s degree in Australia and continues to contribute to the education in Indonesia. She added, “I wish to help build a better place for Indonesian students to learn, acquire knowledge and be able to implement said knowledge in life to help them build a better life for themselves.”

Syifa has a recipe for success. “If something interests you, be curious and find out more about it; I’m talking about skills, clubs, organizations, camp, and such. If you’re scared, that’s okay, but don’t let that fear hinder you from possibly achieving new skills or knowledge, and even friends.”

For introverted people like herself, Syifa advised that you push yourselves to interact with other people. “Your network can really help you in getting a job, so encourage yourself to interact with other people, including your lecturers. It never hurts to be friendly and you never know, it can help you someday,” she wisely stated. (*/)

Luwu Utara Regency Will Send Its Brightest Youths to SU

On February 10th, 2020, Putera Sampoerna Foundation (PSF) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in relation to an education partnership with the Regency of Luwu Utara, South Sulawesi. As part of PSF’s commitment to improving Indonesia’s education quality, the foundation through the partnership will provide financial assistance for smart youths of Luwu Utara to study at Sampoerna University.

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding was conducted at Sampoerna University (L’Avenue Office Tower) and joined by Indra Yudha Pratama Kusumah (Head of Corporate Affairs and Partner Relations, Putera Sampoerna Foundation), Dr. Wahdi Salasi April Yudhi, M. Dev Admin, Ph.D. (Rektor Sampoerna University), dan Indah Putri Indriani, S.IP., MSI (Bupati Luwu Utara).

PSF believes that the improvement of education quality can be reached by many ways, and one of which is improving tertiary education through Sampoerna University. This is made possible thanks to the official collaboration between SU and University of Arizona (one of the best public universities in the United States according to U.S. News & World Report). Indonesian youths can now study under U.S. education system and curriculum for 4 years without ever leaving Jakarta and graduate with two degrees at the same time: a local degree from SU which is nationally recognized by DIKTI (Pendidikan Tinggi) and a U.S. bachelor’s degree which is internationally acknowledged from University of Arizona, U.S.A.

During her brief visit to Sampoerna University, the Regent of Luwu Utara also advised that all students acquired all the knowledge available but at the same time also stay faithful to the national identity as Indonesians. “We are also going to send our brightest youths to study here with us at Sampoerna University,” stated regent Indah Putri Indriani.

Dr. Wahdi Salasi April Yudhi spoke,” We also extend our gratitude to the Regent of Luwu Utara for the support and contribution to improve the education quality in Indonesia, especially one in Luwu Utara.”

He added that SU through PSF and School Development Outreach (SDO) also found a demand to improve the quality of education in Luwu Utara. This is shown by the Net Participation Number and the Gross Participation Number of various educational levels in the regency, from elementary school, high school to higher education, based on the data of Statistics Bureau in 2017.

In addition to enhancing youth quality, PSF and Luwu Utara Regency will promote the quality of local educators through School Development Outreach (SDO) that initiates Teachers Learning Center (TLC) – an independent, systematic, structured, and sustainable learning institution for teachers overseen by the local government.

At TLC, all these teachers can help expand opportunities for teachers to gain access of professional development at a more affordable cost and give more positive impact on students, which eventually create quality human resource. All this is in line with the vision and mission of Luwu Utara Regency which prioritizes quality development and high-quality education. “At last Luwu Utara can make progress, equal to other regencies in Indonesia,” affirmed the regent. Iqbal Pamungkas on Blending between Work and Life

Growing up as a child in a cool and hilly Wonosobo in Central Java, Iqbal Pamungkas has a long story to get to where he is now. At such a young age, he has been an independent individual. “I had lived far away from my parents since I was a junior high school student, then I got accepted in Sampoerna Academy Boarding School with a full scholarship then furthered my education at Sampoerna University,” said Iqbal who got Merit Scholarship as he was admitted at the university.

He then decided to major in Banking and Finance at Sampoerna University. “I also took a two-degree program in collaboration of Oregon State University (OSU) and Sampoerna University,” reminisced the young man who was majoring in Business Administration at Oregon State University at the same time.

Iqbal who is currently working at Grab Indonesia as a Junior Account Manager in Grab for Business recalled the moment of being admitted at Sampoerna University as “the very first experience in having two degree at the end of the university days”.

As a young professional handling the enterprise market and mid-market, he acknowledged that what he learned at SU is of great value. “Literally everything that I learned at SU is useful for my career as I’m now dealing with clients (marketing is very applicable), and a lot with finance, legal matters, and data as well,” stated

Iqbal proves himself to be a work-ready graduate. He adapts easily to professional life simply by managing his time well. “I blend work and life instead of treating both as different worlds,” he said.

Amid his responsibility for managing existing clients and doing acquisitions and partnerships with new clients, he takes time to take care of himself by eating, sleeping well, and working out regularly. He runs every day before going to the office and on weekends he is “trying to reflect”. He also learns about music, singing and social media in his spare time.

Iqbal is now striving to become an expert in Business Development, saying, “My latest professional experience that I have is highly related with Business Development, about how to develop the business and how to grow a business. I really enjoy it as it becomes the core of business.”

After his journey all along, Iqbal has grown into a tougher and wiser man. He never gets dejected to receive rejections. “I learn that the most important of all is how you gain experience and learn something new. Also, I learn not to envy other people’s achievements, but it is easier to be grateful for what we already have now.” (*/)

Writing a Winning College Recommendation Letter

Writing a college recommendation letter can be tricky. “But it can also be painless,” said Sampoerna University’s academic adviser Novi Kusumaningrum at the seminar titled ‘Writing a Winning College Recommendation Letter’. Speaking before the audience consisting of several high school counselors, teachers, and principals around the Jabodetabek area on January 16th, 2020, the academic counselor generously shared some of valuable tips on how to write a riveting college recommendation letter.

Prior to that, she explained why a college recommendation letter is worth the time, thought and effort. “Sometimes we wonder if a university really read the letter before admitting students. How much effort do we have to put in this?”

Although there is no certain answer to this, the fact is competitive universities may read them. “Especially if a university makes it necessary in their application requirements,” Ms. Kusumaningrum said.

“A recommendation letter helps universities see a future student in someone else’s point of view so they can decide whether this student is a good fit for their universities,” said she. They want to see impressive traits and characteristics beyond academic prowess. This is because academic achievements at times cannot show personalities.

A recommendation letter that shows a good storytelling will attract better. This requires proper writing skills in English. Some people do not feel comfortable with writing or it is simply that they are not professionally trained for that. “In this case, a counselor may work together with someone else who is more capable of writing in English such as an English teacher in the same school,” she advised.

Sometimes we think a student’s character or trait is interesting, but the thing is: Does it interest a university?

“It’s because we never know what appeals to universities. It could be as ‘small’ as the university has a small Indonesian population. So, they read everything and want to see if the student is a proper fit for the university,” she added.

An important tip is that a recommendation letter should add details that are not included yet in the CV or application letter and a school’s profile. A recommendation letter must show something else that is not reflected in those documents, Ms. Kusumaningrum spoke.

It is also important to humanize a student in a recommendation letter. ” It shows failure if necessary and how they can overcome this. Because this humanizes them,” Ms. Kusumaningrum stated.

To capture abstract things / traits such as empathy, leadership, etc., she also advised that we use anecdotes.

If you have the privilege to teach the student, that is better. But if you don’t and you still have someone else who knows better, then you can ask for someone else’s help such as the student’s friends. Or simply say NO.

There are various ways that teachers can do to get to know our students better. “Talk to your students. What do you remember the most about the student?”

Another way is read their CV and essays, Ms. Kusumaningrum said. We can ask students reflective questions such as “Where did you grow up and what was it like?”, “What is the proudest moment in your life? Why is it so important to you?”, “Was there a time where you felt like you failed as something? How did that make your feel? What did you do after that?”.

Here participants also shared their experience in writing a recommendation letter for their students’ application.

Ms. Kusumaningrum is experienced in assisting freshmen applications, counseling, and facilitating Sampoerna University students who aim to transfer to U.S. universities. (*/)
