Alfred Juliant Susanto, a Mechanical Engineering graduate of 2022, and James Seby Coronado Bacus, an Accounting student from the class of 2023, showcased exemplary debating skills at the Asian English Olympics 2024 (AEO 2024). Held at Binus University on February 3, 2024, the AEO 2024 is a prominent international competition organized by Bina Nusantara English Club, attracting participants from six nations.

 

The AEO 2024 featured eight competition areas, including Speech, Debate, Newscasting, Storytelling, Spelling Bee, Radio Drama, Short Story Writing, and Scrabble. Representing Sampoerna University, Alfred and Seby participated in the novice category of the debate competition. They navigated through discussions on diverse topics, demonstrating their proficiency in areas such as geopolitics, democracy, electric vehicles, religion, life decisions, and video game regulation.

 

Following rigorous rounds of competition, Alfred and Seby emerged victorious, receiving the coveted title of Novice Champions in the AEO 2024. Their remarkable achievement not only reflects their dedication and talent but also underscores Sampoerna University’s commitment to nurturing students’ intellectual prowess and communication skills.

Gisella Karina Emaputri, an Industrial Engineering student from the class of 2021, showcased exceptional grace and intelligence at the Mister and Miss Grand Tourism 2024 competition. Held on January 19, 2024, at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, this prestigious event featured 47 finalists competing to become Indonesia’s official tourism ambassador.

 

Representing DKI Jakarta, Gisella captivated the audience and judges with her eloquence and modeling prowess. She earned the accolade of 2nd Winner and was honored with the Best Intelligentsia award for her articulate responses to philosophical questions and insightful perspectives on the tourism sector.

 

Gisella’s innovative proposal to leverage social media for enhancing tourism in DKI Jakarta further demonstrated her strategic thinking and commitment to promoting Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. Beatrice Hillary Sinawang, a standout Industrial Engineering student from Sampoerna University, has emerged victorious at the 7th International Conference on Computers in Management & Business (ICCMB 2024). Held from January 12 to 14 in Singapore, this prestigious event brought together leading minds in the field of business and management. Representing Sampoerna University, Beatrice presented her research titled “Optimizing Value Proposition and Customer Engagement in Mobile Applications: Using UML with Process Chain Analysis.” Her innovative approach, which utilized a multi-criteria decision tree, provided actionable insights for enhancing customer engagement in coffee chain mobile applications. Beatrice’s exceptional presentation skills and groundbreaking findings garnered her the Best Presentation Award, affirming Sampoerna University’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and innovative thinking among its students.

Sampoerna University Achieves 7th Position in Nature Index 2023: Strengthening Research Contribution in Indonesia

Sampoerna University, as a world-class institution of higher education, has achieved a remarkable accomplishment by securing the 7th position in the recently released Nature Index 2023. This success also places Sampoerna University as the second-best private university in Indonesia according to the index. During the research period from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023, the university recorded a share value of 0.40 in leading international journals, providing an overview of the institution’s research across scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, health, and physics.

 

The Nature Index, created by Nature Research, a scientific publishing division of the Nature Publishing Group, evaluates scientific institutions based on their research output. This evaluation considers both the quantity and quality of articles published in international journals during a specific research period. Unlike solely focusing on the quantity of research, the Nature Index also examines the individual contributions of each researcher. By analyzing the number of research articles published and the extent of authors’ contributions from a specific institution, the Nature Index assesses the scientific publication output. Utilizing its unique metric, known as the share value, the Nature Index provides valuable insights into an institution’s influence in published articles.

This research was conducted by Dr. Ilham Prasetyo and Idrus Belfaqih, M.S., Physics Lecturers at Sampoerna University, whose expertise and dedication reflect the quality of research conducted at Sampoerna University.

Company Visit Summary: PT. Arwana Citramulia Ceramic Plant

On November 23rd, 2023, a group of Industrial Engineering students from Sampoerna University embarked on a company visit to Plant II of PT Arwana Citramulia, a prominent ceramic company situated in Cikande, Banten. This visit was organized as part of their Manufacturing Process course, offering students valuable insights into the practical aspects of industrial engineering.

 

The journey commenced at 8 AM, with participants boarding a bus from Sampoerna University, arriving at the PT Arwana Citramulia premises by 9:50 AM. Upon arrival, Mr. Rally Sudarta, the VP of Human Resources-General Affairs at PT Arwana, warmly welcomed the students. The visit began with a session of refreshments, followed by a comprehensive overview of the company, including its history and operations, through a detailed company profile presentation.

PT Arwana Citramulia Tbk operates in the ceramic, porcelain, and granite tile industry. Their products, marketed under the Arwana, UNO, and ARNA brands, cater to different market segments. All products adhere to stringent production standards, including SNI (Indonesian National Standard), ISO 13006, ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System), and the green industry standard SIH 23929.1:2017 (Ceramic Tile Industry).

 

Since initiating commercial production in 1995, PT Arwana Citramulia has expanded to five plants, featuring ample greenery. The company regularly engages in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, such as building schools, providing agricultural education to housewives, and offering medical check-ups to the local community.

The highlight of the visit was a guided tour through the factory, led by Plant Manager Mr. Tendy Susanto. The tour provided students with firsthand knowledge of the intricate processes involved in ceramic production. Starting at the storage area for materials like clay and silica, the manufacturing process progressed through mixing, pressing, horizontal drying, glazing, printing (using both rotary and digital methods), firing, quality control, and finally, packaging. The tour also included a visit to the Research and Development (R&D) department.

 

After a shared lunch, the visit concluded at 2 PM, and the participants boarded the bus for their return journey to Sampoerna University. The company visit proved to be a valuable learning experience for the Industrial Engineering 2021 students, offering real-world exposure to the manufacturing processes of a leading ceramic company. This practical encounter is expected to significantly contribute to their understanding of industrial engineering concepts and their application in the ceramic industry.

Pelatihan Augmented Reality dengan Vuforia oleh PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia

Kolaborasi Bapak Santo Tjhin dengan tim pimpinan di PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia, sebuah perusahaan yang mengkhususkan diri dalam distribusi global perangkat lunak Augmented Reality dan perangkat lunak 3D dalam industri media baru, telah membuahkan hasil yang bermanfaat. Kemitraan ini berakar pada saat Pak Santo menjabat sebagai tenaga pendidik pada program studi media baru DKV di Binus University. Pada tanggal 27 Oktober 2023, Bapak Santo berdiskusi dengan Ibu Diah, Direktur Pemasaran, dan Bapak Kharisma, Direktur Pelaksana PT Hetra Teknologi Indonesia, dengan fokus pada potensi inisiatif pelatihan di Sampoerna University dan menjajaki peluang kolaborasi dalam magang.

 

Komunikasi selanjutnya berjalan lancar, didorong oleh hubungan jangka panjang antara Bapak Santo dan PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia. Topik pelatihan yang diusulkan, “Nurturing Future Skills with Vuforia,” telah disepakati, dengan fokus khusus pada sesi praktik di mana mahasiswa Sampoerna University akan belajar membuat target AR untuk aplikasi augmented reality. Acara yang dijadwalkan berlangsung pada tanggal 13 November 2023, mulai pukul 13.30 dan seterusnya, menandai perkembangan signifikan yang segera dikomunikasikan oleh Bapak Santo kepada seluruh pimpinan FET.

 

 

Untuk menyukseskan pelaksanaan pelatihan, Bapak Santo bekerjasama dengan pengurus SAA dan FET yaitu Ibu Dilla Ayu Wardani untuk melakukan pembekalan sebelum acara. Pada tanggal 13 November 2023 telah dilaksanakan Pelatihan Augmented Reality di VCD Creative Center lantai 7 dengan antusias menarik 30 peserta.

 

Acara diawali dengan perkenalan oleh pembawa acara, Nona Lala, mahasiswa Sampoerna University dari Fakultas Bisnis. Kuis yang meriah menambah antusias peserta, yang berujung pada sambutan dan perkenalan oleh Bapak Surya Danusaputro dan Bapak Tombak Matahari, Head of Department VCD. Souvenir dari Sampoerna University kepada Vuforia Indonesia diserahkan oleh Bapak Tombak dan Bapak Santo sebagai simbol rasa syukur atas kerjasama yang telah terjalin.

 

Bapak Kharisma, selaku Managing Director, naik panggung untuk menyampaikan presentasi tentang evolusi Augmented Reality dan dampaknya terhadap sektor kreatif dan pendidikan. Menekankan pesatnya pertumbuhan teknologi, ia menyoroti potensi besar lulusan Desain Komunikasi Visual untuk berkontribusi di berbagai industri melalui penguasaan Augmented Reality.

 

 

Pelatihan dilanjutkan dengan sesi yang dipimpin oleh Ibu Diah selaku Direktur Pemasaran yang mendemonstrasikan pemrograman AR menggunakan Unity Software dan software Vuforia. Mahasiswa Sampoerna University dengan penuh semangat bereksperimen dan menerapkan Vuforia dalam menciptakan Augmented Reality, menunjukkan antusiasme dan pemahaman mereka terhadap teknologi tersebut.

 

Pasca pelatihan, peserta ditugaskan untuk memproduksi proyek AR, dan hasilnya sangat mengesankan. Teknologi Vuforia yang ramah pengguna terbukti efektif, terutama ketika peserta memiliki dasar yang kuat dalam prinsip-prinsip desain.

 

Acara ini diakhiri dengan forum tanya jawab komprehensif yang dimoderatori oleh Ibu Diah dan Bapak Ayub, memberikan para mahasiswa wawasan berharga tentang peran perangkat lunak Vuforia dan perkembangan teknologi AR di masa depan. Setelah itu, sebuah kuis menantang peserta dalam pembelajaran Vuforia mereka, sehingga menciptakan suasana yang menarik dan interaktif.

 

Dalam sambutan penutupnya, Bapak Santo menyampaikan terima kasih dan apresiasi kepada ajaran komprehensif PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia tentang Augmented Reality. Acara diakhiri dengan sesi foto bersama yang mengabadikan keberhasilan bersama Pelatihan AR ini.

 

Keberhasilan Pelatihan Vuforia secara keseluruhan menunjukkan potensi untuk diadakan lagi di masa depan, mengingat tingginya permintaan dari mahasiswa meskipun kapasitas tempat pelatihan terbatas.

Augmented Reality Training with Vuforia by PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia

The collaboration between Mr. Santo Tjhin and the leadership team at PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia, a company specializing in the global distribution of Augmented Reality software and 3D software within the new media industry, has yielded fruitful results. This partnership took root during Mr. Santo’s tenure as an educator in the DKV new media study program at Binus University. On October 27, 2023, Mr. Santo engaged in discussions with Mrs. Diah, the Marketing Director, and Mr. Kharisma, the Managing Director of PT Hetra, focusing on potential training initiatives at Sampoerna University and exploring opportunities for collaboration in internships.

 

The subsequent communication was seamless, driven by the longstanding relationship between Mr. Santo and PT. Hetra. The proposed training topic, “Nurturing Future Skills with Vuforia,” was agreed upon, with a specific focus on hands-on sessions where Sampoerna University students would learn to create target AR for augmented reality applications. The scheduled event took place on November 13, 2023, from 1:30 pm onwards, marking a significant development that Mr. Santo promptly communicated to all FET leaders.

To ensure the successful execution of the training, Mr. Santo collaborated with SAA and FET administrators, namely Mrs. Dilla Ayu Wardani, for a pre-event briefing. On November 13, 2023, the Augmented Reality Training unfolded at the Creative Center VCD on the 7th floor, attracting 30 enthusiastic participants.

 

The event commenced with an introduction by the master of ceremonies, Ms. Lala, a Sampoerna University student from the Faculty of Business. A lively quiz heightened participants’ enthusiasm, leading to remarks and introductions by Mr. Surya Danusaputro and Mr. Tombak Matahari, Head of Department VCD. Souvenirs from Sampoerna University to Vuforia Indonesia were presented by Mr. Tombak and Mr. Santo, symbolizing gratitude for their collaboration.

 

Mr. Kharisma, the Managing Director, took the stage to deliver a presentation on the evolution of Augmented Reality and its impact on the creative and educational sectors. Emphasizing the rapid growth of technology, he highlighted the immense potential for Visual Communication Design graduates to contribute to various industries through mastering Augmented Reality.

 

The training continued with a session led by Mrs. Diah, the Marketing Director, demonstrating AR programming using Unity Software and Vuforia software. Sampoerna University students eagerly experimented with and applied Vuforia in creating Augmented Reality, showcasing their enthusiasm and grasp of the technology.

Post-training, participants were tasked with producing AR projects, and the results were impressive. Vuforia’s user-friendly technology proved effective, especially when participants had a strong foundation in design principles.

 

The event culminated in a comprehensive question-and-answer forum moderated by Mrs. Diah and Mr. Ayub, providing students with valuable insights into the role of Vuforia software and the future development of AR technology. Following this, a quiz challenged participants on their Vuforia learning, fostering an engaging and interactive atmosphere.

 

In his closing remarks, Mr. Santo expressed gratitude and appreciation for PT. Hetra Teknologi Indonesia’s comprehensive teachings on Augmented Reality. The event concluded with a group photo session, capturing the shared success of the Augmented Reality Training.

 

The overall success of the Vuforia Training indicates its potential for future iterations, acknowledging the high demand from students despite the limited capacity of the training venue.

Guest Lecture by Dr. Ong Chi Wei: Insights into Aortic Disease Progression using Computational Fluid Dynamics

On November 9th, 2023, FETINADEC held a guest lecture event for FET Students, Lecturers, and Staff. This guest lecture event demonstrated the adaptability of academic forums. The guest was an expert lecturer from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Dr. Ong Chi Wei.

Dr. Ong Chi Wei is an expert lecturer in the field of biomedical engineering. With a research focus on biomechanics, fluid-structure interaction, computational fluid dynamics, and finite element analysis. The guest lecturer’s interdisciplinary approach is to the complexities of modern biomedical engineering research.

In this guest lecture, Dr. Ong shared his insight on the latest innovative research on Aortic Disease using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Dr. Ong explained that the CFD can help us to combine computer science with engineering science using AI to solve governing questions of fluid by using computational methods under various physical conditions to study different phenomena.  On the other hand, Dr. Ong also explained the other applications of CFD, for example, to optimize the speed of racing cars. Here, the CFD is applied in the optimization of the design of cars that can deal with turbulence.

For the application of CFD on Aortic Disease, Dr. Ong explained the background introduction on why it is urgent to do this research. Most people do not know they have an aneurysm until it is life-threatening. Over 60% of those with ruptured aneurysm will die. Therefore, this reason became the biggest motivation for Dr. Ong and his team to research the prevention of aortic aneurysms.

In conclusion, our comprehensive exploration of Aortic Disease and Computational Fluid Dynamics has provided an understanding of the intersection of engineering and biomedical. The active and insightful participation from both students and lecturers has enhanced our lecture. As we investigate deeper into this interdisciplinary field, it is evident that collaborative efforts are essential for advancing our knowledge and developing innovative solutions. We extend our gratitude to all participants for their valuable contributions. 

As the guest lecture neared its end, all attendees and the guest lecturer convened for a commemorative photo. In summary, the conclusion of this lecture was favorable and predicts future engagements.

Sampoerna University Presents A Workshop for Garuda Cendekia Junior High-School Students: “Applying Critical Thinking Skills by Identifying Fake News”

In an effort to equip junior high school students with essential skills for the digital age, Sampoerna University, through its Education (ELed) students specializing in Literacy, Culture, and the Development of Critical Readers, recently conducted a workshop at Garuda Cendekia Junior High School. The focus of the workshop was to enhance student’s awareness of the prevalence of fake news and hoaxes in mass and social media, empowering them with strategies to identify misinformation and reliable sources of information.

 

The workshop, held on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at Garuda Cendekia School, witnessed the participation of 42 students from the Class Representative Council (MPK) and Intra-School Student Organization (OSIS) of Garuda Cendekia Junior High School. The event was facilitated by Sampoerna University ELed students, who, having taken the subject of Literacy, Culture, and the Development of Critical Readers were well-prepared to share insights and strategies in combating the challenges posed by fake news.

 

In today’s digital era, information, and media literacy have become indispensable skills, particularly for students who navigate an online landscape saturated with information of varying credibility. The workshop aimed to empower students with the ability to apply critical thinking skills when encountering information online, enabling them to discern between trustworthy and false content. As noted by Flanagin (2008), the current generation of students is exposed to a vast array of information online, necessitating the cultivation of skills to differentiate between accurate and misleading data.

 

During the workshop, participants engaged in sessions that provided them with practical strategies to recognize reliable sources of information, identify fake news or hoaxes, and critically evaluate digital media. Moreover, the workshop emphasized the rights and responsibilities of digital media users, including ethical considerations in sharing information online. This holistic approach aims to mold students into intelligent consumers of information and responsible contributors to the digital discourse.

 

The enthusiastic response from the participants underscored their interest in delving deeper into the intricacies of media literacy. The workshop not only addressed the immediate need for critical thinking skills but also instilled in students a sense of responsibility as digital citizens.

 

According to Strauss (2000), media literacy workshops play a crucial role in shaping students into individuals who are not only aware of the potential pitfalls of digital information but also responsible for their consumption and dissemination of content. By conducting such workshops, educational institutions contribute to the creation of a generation that actively safeguards information integrity and positively engages in the digital landscape.

 

Furthermore, beyond the educational benefits, the workshop served as an opportunity for Sampoerna University ELed students to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom setting. Held monthly or bimonthly, the Lingua Plaza event held on Friday, 3rd November 2023, from 15:30 to 17:00 at 19F.01, exemplified the vision of fostering a strong sense of community. Organized and led by FoE students, the Lingua Plaza is a testament to the university’s commitment to providing a holistic learning experience.

 

The primary goal of the Lingua Plaza is to allow students to articulate their thoughts and experiences in English, thereby gaining exposure to the language in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The event encourages participants to initiate discussions on topics of their choosing, creating an open and engaging space for language practice and cultural exchange.

 

A distinctive aspect of the Lingua Plaza is its inclusive nature, welcoming students not only from the Faculty of Education but also from other faculties. This deliberate inclusion aims to foster connections and friendships across disciplines, enriching the university experience beyond the classroom.

 

Quoted from a testimonial shared by Pak Eka, several students shared their impressions and takeaways from the Lingua Plaza program. Bahagia Dito Mangkuluhur, a member of the Cohort 2020, described the event as “fun, enriching, and engaging,” highlighting the unique approach of introducing uncommon topics that sparked enjoyable and stimulating conversations.

 

Queen Sahana Tazky Han, also from Cohort 2020, praised Lingua Plaza for providing an interactive and supportive learning environment. According to her, the sessions not only helped in practice English-speaking skills but also boosted her confidence. She expressed her appreciation for the interactive sharing sessions with friends and lecturers, expanding her horizon of knowledge. 

 

Anista Satria, a participant from Cohort 2021, emphasized that Lingua Plaza goes beyond academic discussions. In her perspective, the event serves as a platform to foster relationships between students and lecturers, creating a space for meaningful connections outside the academic realm.

 

Nathasya Olas, another participant from Cohort 2021, echoed a sentiment of camaraderie and unity. For her, Lingua Plaza is not merely an avenue for sharing experiences but a representation of unity and collaboration within the FOE community. The event, in her view, has evolved into a comforting space where students from various cohorts and lecturers bond over shared campus experiences.

ReadNest Community Service Initiative: Igniting a Love for Books in the Digital Age.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital media, the community service initiative ReadNest was introduced by the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) in collaboration with the FET Student Executive Body (BEM) to revive the reading culture among young people. This program aims to enhance literacy skills and foster a love for reading among elementary school students, addressing an essential need in today’s rapidly changing and technology-driven society. The ReadNest initiative, a community service project, recently concluded with remarkable success. This initiative, a collaboration between the FET Community Service and the BEM KM FET 2023/2024 at Sampoerna University, has made progress in improving literacy among elementary school students. The event was held at SDN Gadog 2 Sukajadi in Bogor, West Java.

 

The initiative included setting up a mini library, complete with quality bookshelves and an efficient library information system. The main activities of this program were interactive storytelling sessions, educational games, and comprehensive digital literacy training, designed to engage and educate elementary school students in a fun and interactive way.

 

 

The initiative was carried out by lecturers and students from the Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, and Visual Communication Design study programs at Sampoerna University. Each part played a vital role in the success of this project. They brought these activities to the enthusiastic elementary school students of SDN Gadog 2 Sukajadi, Bogor, who were the primary beneficiaries of this program.

 

The ReadNest initiative received highly positive feedback. A survey conducted at the end of the event showed a significant increase in student engagement and reading comprehension abilities. The initiative was appreciated by educators, community members, and the participating students themselves for its innovative approach and meaningful impact.

 

 

The ReadNest initiative is proof of the power of collaborative community service. Its success has opened doors for future initiatives and set a precedent for similar programs aimed at empowering young learners. The collaboration between the FET Community Service and the 2023/2024 FET KM BEM at Sampoerna University has not only been beneficial for the participants but also serves as an excellent example of community engagement and educational development.
