On June 7, 2024, students from Sampoerna University’s Psychology Department took part in a meaningful community service activity at SLB C Swakarya, a school for children with intellectual disabilities located near the university campus.
This initiative was more than just a visit—it was an opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of intellectual disabilities through direct interaction.
Getting to Know Intellectual Disabilities Up Close
In Indonesia, the number of children diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, also known as tunagrahita in bahasa Indonesia, continues to rise each year.
This condition is usually diagnosed before the age of 18 and includes challenges like cognitive delays, IQ scores below 70, and difficulty in communication or adapting to daily life. It’s estimated that around 5–6% of children with disabilities in Indonesia are affected.
One school that has been supporting children with intellectual disabilities for decades is SLB C Swakarya. Established in 1977, this independent institution serves students from primary through high school levels. Unlike many state-funded schools, Swakarya operates with limited resources, making partnerships with universities like Sampoerna University especially valuable.
Learning through Play and Art
During their visit, the Sampoerna University Psychology students joined Swakarya’s children in fun, creative activities like games and art sessions. These moments weren’t just enjoyable, but also gave students a chance to observe, connect, and better understand how intellectual disabilities affect behavior, learning, and interaction.
It was a hands-on introduction to concepts from their abnormal psychology course, and it helped bring their classroom lessons to life.
A Meaningful Step Toward Becoming Compassionate Professionals
This community service activity gave students real insight into what it takes to work with children with special needs. It also helped build the kind of empathy, patience, and awareness that are essential for future psychologists and mental health professionals.
At the same time, the experience reminded them that psychology isn’t just about theory—it’s about people.
